Producers' (farmers') story...
Though Organic Farming/Food is no more a new terminology, organic cultivation is yet to become normal practice among farmers. India is home to 30% of total organic producers in the world, but accounts for just 2.59% (1.5 million hectares) of the total organic cultivation area (57.8 million hectares) according to the World of Organic Agriculture 2018 report. Indian farmers showing very low interest in organic farming for a number of reasons, eg: unavailability of complete Package of Practice of Organic/Natural Farming, lack of authentic sources of technical know-how as well as inputs, insufficient farm laborers (organic farming needs more labor). Another fact is – large area is already under Organic/Natural cultivation in India, but that’s not on-record because these areas are not certified. Organic certification is still very cumbersome & costly affair for Indian farmers, particularly small & marginal.
Consumers’ story…
We all are very familiar with the phrases like - We are what we eat, Health is wealth etc. But very few of us take it seriously. We spend lot of time, effort & money for buying clothes, going on a trip and all other activities of our life, but when it comes to food, we hardly think that much. Also, though we all have soft corners in our heart for the farmers of our country, but we are hesitant in paying high prices for our food. Perhaps because we think that very small part of our money is going to farmers’ pockets.
Healthy food for all…
Back to Village (B2V) is bridging this gap. On one side, we are creating awareness about organic/natural cultivation among farmers through intensive awareness & training programs in various parts of the country. And on the other side, we are educating consumers to GO FOR QUALITY (i.e. nutritional value of food) and NOT QUANTITY. We assist farmers at each and every step in their farming, right from crop selection to seeds availability, training & capacity building, pest & disease management and last but not the least – market linkage. Our objective is to provide healthy food for all. Currently organic items are so costly that only rich people have the luxury to have it. Indirectly it says that if you are poor or middle class, you have to eat poisonous food. For this very reason, we are working on minimizing the gap between chemical & non-chemical items.
